reading notes: ramayana part C

The Ramayana by R. K. Narayan (no link because the book is physical), pages 89-131

• Sita hears what she think is Rama calling for help and sends Lakshmana to go check it out
• Once Sita is alone, Ravana disguises himself as an old hermit so that Sita is nice to him
• Once Ravana reveals himself, Sita tells him to go away but Ravana picks up the ground around her and flies away, taking Sita
• Jatayu goes to rescue Sita but is defeated and killed
• Rama and Lakshmana come back to find Jatayu dying and he dies before he's able to tell them where Ravana is
• Rama and Lakshmana head towards Kishkinda, the monkey kingdom
• monkey Hanuman meets Rama and Lakshmana disguised as a scholar but Rama isn't deceived
• Rama knows that Hanuman is loyal to Sugriva, brother of the king of Kishkinda, Vali
• Vali is powerful with fighting powers that he got by giving the gods nectar he churned from the ocean
• Vali fought a demon Mayavi and chased him into a cave
• Surgriva blocked the entrance of cave to trap Mayavi and when Vali emerged, he was angry at his brother
• Surgriva fled off to Mount Matanga in exile after being beaten by Vali and Vali took his wife
• Hanuman believes that Rama could help Sugriva defeat Vali since he is Vishnu incarnate and Rama feels bad for Surgriva
• Vali will die if he comes to Mount Matanga becuase he was cursed a while ago
• monkeys found Sita's jewelry that she purposely dropped as Ravana took her away and Surgriva gives Rama the jewelry, telling him he'll help Rama find her
• Surgriva challenges Vali and during the fight, Rama shoots at arrow at Vali and kills him
• Sugriva becomes king and Rama gives him advice about how to rule
• Rama and Lakshmana stay in the forest, waiting for Sugriva to gather an army to help them find Sita, but he forgets and Rama has to send Lakshmana to remind Surgriva of his promise
• Sugriva is too drunk to think about his promise so Lakshmana kicks down the city gates and sees Sugriva
• Sugriva promises to never drink again and goes to Rama
• Sugriva gathers a large army and Rama gives Hanuman his ring to show Sita if he does find her
• Hanuman and Angada get trapped in a tunnel and find an underground kingdom that has long been deserted 
• they find Swayamprabha, a nymph that used to be a goddess
• once they break out of the tunner, the nymph returns to heaven and then they reach the edge of the ocean without being able to find Sita
• they meet Sampathi, who had fallen to earth and had his wings burned
• when he hears the name Rama, his wings grow back and then he is able to see Ravana taking Sita away to Lanka
• Jambavan tells Hanuman to cross he ocean to find Sita so Hanuman becomes a giant so he can step across the ocean
