my life as Audrey Given, an introduction

Hey everyone! I always find introduction posts a little bit awkward but I'll try and make this fun to read!!

My name is Audrey Given and I'm 20 years old (almost put 19 oop), but all my friends are turning 21 already so ... :( I am a junior here at the University of Oklahoma and I moved here from Dallas, Texas, which I still think is so much better than Oklahoma (not sorry). I'm majoring biology pre-med and I initially chose biology because I thought it was one of the easier majors for pre-med students but turns out I actually like biology, so that turned out well. I also technically have a business minor but I hate business and haven't completed any of the required classes, so that's how that's going LOL.

Some cool facts about me is that I have a Pomeranian Poodle named Taro. I asked my parents if I could get a dog and when they both said no I got her anyways :3 After my mom saw her though she fell absolutely in love and always begs me to leave Taro behind when I go back to college. Unfortunately she's not a rescue dog because I'm allergic to dogs and hypoallergenic dogs are hard to find in shelters. But, she is my absolute world even though she still uses the bathroom in my house >;( At night she sleeps with me and she's ALWAYS little spoon. Kind of selfish if you ask me.

Here is a picture I took of Taro wearing her OU jersey #boomer

Some of my hobbies include impulsively shopping, eating Takis, bullet journaling and making Youtube videos. However, I don't really make any videos anymore because I am ... cómo se dice ... lazy? I actually am working on a vlog of my recent trip to Maui, Hawaii, aka my new favorite place on Earth, so lets hope I finish it and actually upload a video for once. Bullet journaling is something I also like doing because it allows me to be creative throughout the year while I'm drowning in my science classes. If you've been questioning if you should start a bullet journal yourself, I recommend you just do it because it's so much fun!

I hope that gave you a little insight about me and my life!

  1. Oh, your little Taro is so cute, Audrey! I don't think I've ever seen a Pomeranian Poodle before, but I know I like Poodles; all the Poodle dogs I've ever met have been so smart and friendly. And I keep hearing about bullet journals which must be a sign that I should give it a try! Maybe you could even use that as a storytelling style; you could do the bullet-journals of the epic heroes and heroines. That could be really cool!
One thing I really want to get into this year is sketchnoting. I follow some people at Twitter who do such cool things with sketchnoting, and I even bought Sylvia Duckworth's book. Now I just need to find time to give it a try and start learning, ha ha. Sketchnotes for Educators.

  2. Hi Audrey! I don't think this post was awkward at all and it was definitely fun to read! I am also a Bio Pre-med major! I chose this major for the same reason as you but now that I get to take all the higher level bio courses I am LOVING it. (Genetics 3333 is AWESOME!) I am a dog person and I love your Pomeranian Poodle!

  3. Hi Audrey,
AHHH. Your dog is so so so cute!!! I love her name, too! Why did you name her Taro? I know I love taro milk tea and taro smoothies, but that's about all I know about taro. You're going to be graduating soon! I hope you are excited and ready to start on this long cycle to apply to medical schools.
Hoping that you can take Taro wherever you are headed!

  4. Im actually turning 21 on Wednesday! I don’t drink but I am super excited to go to the top of the warren (Im a big movie person). I am also a junior. I was biology pre-med up until this semester. I just changed to pre-pa. Now I have so much less stress. I LOVE POMERANIANS!!! Taro is adorable! That is cool you make YouTube videos. I have one that has 2.3 million views, but it has been on there since I was 12. Good luck this semester!

  5. Hi Audrey,

I'm also a pre-med, but instead of choosing something that seems simple, I chose chemical engineering. It was not fun the three semesters I was in it haha. Anyways, biology has also grown to be my favorite subject. I'm actually a Chemical Bioscience major, but the biology concept is my favorite part. That's awesome that you make YouTube videos! I tried once but wasn't too successful so I stopped haha. Good luck on everything!

  6. Hey Aubrey!
I know how you feel about everyone turning 21 when you are younger, I experienced that when I was around your age! Your major sounds insanely hard. I know my girlfriend is in the exact same major and I just do not understand how you guys can like science so much ha. I have a hard-enough time with just regular science! I hope the rest of your semester goes well!

  7. Oh, Audrey! You're hilarious! I know you're stressed out about the business classes, but don't worry, there are plenty of businesses that you can contract with to run the business side of your practice if you decide to become an independent practitioner. My husband works for Surgical Care Affiliates. They provide the business structure for surgical care centers. There is a LOT that goes on in the business side. Remember, you don't have to be responsible for all of it, but that business minor is going to help you have intelligent conversations with the people making sure that you're getting paid, and in turn your staff is getting paid!

Good luck with your classes! Once I find it, I'll share my silly concept map about CRISPR technology for my Intro to Biology class.

  8. Hey Audrey! Your dog is really cute! I think it's funny that your parents wouldn't let you get a dog and you went ahead and bought her anyways. Glad to see your dog supports OU. From one student from Texas to another - the state is better, we just have to dislike the schools in Texas. Hope your semester goes well!

  9. Hi Audrey!
I'm a junior too, and I know how you feel with all your friends turning 21. I'm the youngest of all my friends and all of them are turning 21 (gotta love summer birthdays). Your dog is precious and I think it's awesome you were able to find a hypoallergenic dog. She looks adorable in her jersey too, my roommate has a dog and we always put her in a jersey for gamedays!

  10. Hi Audrey!
I have really bad allergies as well. I have two bichons right now that I am watching. They are my parent's pups. They don's shed at all and look just like your puppy. I am getting a goldendoodle in a few months too. While I would love a big furry golden retriever, I do not know if I would ever be able to breath haha. Also I have never heard of bullet journaling so I will have to check that out. Awesome intro!

  11. Hey Audrey,

First of all, I love Taro and I already wanted to meet her really badly. I also really love Takis and I'm glad you have good taste in chips, as that is really important. I find it interesting that you make YouTube videos! I feel like it is really niche, as you really need a good personality to be able to be a social media person like that, and I feel like you fit right for that!

  12. Hi Audrey!
Ok first of all, I am in love with your dog in that OU jersey. That is amazing that you enjoy biology so much. I love your blunt honesty, and you seem super funny and entertaining to be around. Like you, I am also a pre-med student, and I am excited to meet more people who have similar career goals as me. Also, I went to Hawaii when I was younger, and it has been a dream to go back one day. Good luck with everything!

  13. Hi Audrey! I saw your comments on Long's story about Yerdua and had to check your blog out. I'm also from out of state and it's hard for Norman, Oklahoma to beat your hometown, especially since you're from Dallas. I think your dog is really cute too! I'm glad you don't have to leave him in Texas when you're at OU.

  14. Hey Audrey!!
Good to hear from you again! I remember meeting you (and your GoPro) at Camp Crimson before our freshman year and its fun to see that you're still uploading some videos (if only occasionally)! I loved your blunt take on your majors/minors/life in general. It was really refreshing and came across really well online! Can't wait to read your stories!

  15. Hi Audrey! First and foremost….that dog is too cute. As an Oklahoman, Oklahoma is not the best, but it’s been undergoing quite the renaissance over the past decade that is containing. Check out the Midtown scene when you hit 21! I can’t say I’ve ever been to Hawaii so I must express a bit of jealousy and I think you should throw in a shameless plug of your vlog. Thanks for sharing and best of luck!

  16. Audrey,
HEY GIRL, HEYYY! It's nice to have a class with you, since I have not seen you in a while!! I literally laughed so hard about the story on how you got your dog! I feel like with every single animal that I currently have, it was always a "no" or "you do not need an animal, you have enough going on" but afterwards, everyone is obsessed and in love with them. I loved getting to read your introduction!

  17. Hi Audrey,
Dogs are the best animals ever, so I'm glad you went ahead and got one despite your parents' initial answer. I have a few dogs at home (in Dallas too) and they fill my camera roll every time I go home. I also was trying to find a major to go along with pre-dental, but I settled on Chemical Biosciences, because it has more of a human anatomy and physiology focus. I'm glad choosing Biology worked out for you! Nice to meet you!

  18. Hey Audrey! I am also from Dallas and it is way better than anywhere in Oklahoma for sure. I could never imagine being a biology major or premed. Biology was always a subject that I just couldn't get the grasp of. Hawaii is one of the coolest places and I always love when I get to go there and I am not surprised that you enjoyed it. Good luck the rest of the semester.

  19. I've never seen a pomeranian poodle! What would they be called? A pompoodle? HAH! I'm also a premed, majoring in biochem! Can't say I actually like biochem, BUT a majority of my classes classes are chemistry. I love chem, so it partially worked out! I like that you named your dog Taro! Like the fruit (or vegetable, I'm honestly not so sure!). I like the Taro tea from Kung fu a lot! Anyways, good luck on your semester as well as your journey in medicine!

  20. Audrey,
Your dog is the embodiment of cuteness. I'm always amazed when I see pictures of dogs that rival my own dog in cuteness. Taro and my dog Cooper are in a pretty close race for "cutest dog ever."
I find it pretty interesting when people have major/minor combinations that I haven't seen before. Pre-med biology AND a business minor? It sounds like you're trying to do too much. If you haven't taken those business classes yet, maybe you just scrap it? I'm only saying that because you don't seem like you even want to do it in the first place. Just a thought.
My roommate is also a pre-med, and he's been studying day and night (literally) for the MCAT. I'm assuming you have been studying a bunch too- good luck on your test. I hope you get the score you need for med school!
It's nice to meet you and Taro!

  21. Hi Audrey,
I'm a senior, and I am about to turn 21, so I definitely get the being young thing. Everyone from Dallas always says that Texas is better. You guys just haven't experienced the beauty of Oklahoma yet!!! Awwww, Taro is so adorable! Pre-med, you're amazing!! You might just take a business class this summer and see how it goes. I know how hard it can just to get started on something. Once you get that first step, it should go by faster.

  22. Hey Audrey!

I finally got around to reading your intro. The entire time I was reading, I could hear you saying the words. I’m a biochemistry major and I thought I loved chemistry but now that I’m in my third year, I absolutely hate it. I am ready to be done with it. I would love to see some of your creativity in your journal but I know it’s probably personal. I just love seeing other people’s ideas. I wish you luck on everything!

  24. Hey Audrey,

I've never heard of a Pomeranian Poodle mix before! Your dog is so cute! I'm gonna be shopping for OU dog jerseys ASAP. Takis are delicious; I'm thinking about branching out into some different flavors, but classic is the one for me as of now. What's your Youtube? It's great that you have so many creative outlets! I'm glad that you've found your passion in Biology– I feel like finding out what you love to do is one of the major obstacles of college, but it sounds like you are on your way!

  25. Hey Audrey,

I really enjoyed your into and thought it was pretty funny! I'm also from Dallas, Texas and I know one thing for sure is there is way better food in Dallas than in Norman. I'm also currently a junior at OU but I'm a Finance major with a accounting minor which sounds like you worse nightmares. Enjoy the rest of your online semester.

  26. Hi again!

Love that you bullet journal. I used to keep up with my own but it got so time consuming I just stopped making time for it... buut fortunately (and unfortunately) now we have all the time in the world so I have no excuses not to pick journaling back up again. Hope you're doing well whether you're here or back home in Dallas! :-)
