week 10: extra credit reading notes

• Daksha, the father of Sati, does no approve of her marriage to Shiva so in anger, she immolates herself
• Shiva is so angry that he has a supernatural warrior behead Daksha
• Sati is reborn as Pampa, a river goddess and now Brahma is her father
• Sati is waiting for Shiva's arrival and one day she rescues a sage who happens to be Shiva disguised
• They end up getting married and a shower of gold falls upon them
• Vali is the king of monkeys and he gains half the strength of any opponent he fights
• Anjana goes to Shiva and asks for a son but Vali is frightened that Shiva's son will be as strong as Shiva so he tries to harm Anjana when pregnant but fails
• Anjana gives birth to Hanuman
• As a baby, Hanuman is strong and mischievous and that gets him into trouble one day when he is cursed to forget his own supernatural powers
• Hanuman ends up going into exile with Sugriva after Sugriva mistakenly thinks Vali gets killed in a fight
• Sugriva and Hanuman meet 2 strangers, Rama and Lakshmana, who help them defeat Vali and in exchange, Hanuman is sent out to find Sita
• In reward for finding Sita, Hanuman is given a temple
