week 9: extra credit reading notes

Kubera: The Lord of Wealth, written by Anant Pai

• Trinabindu's daughter marries Pulstya and their child is Vishrava
• Vishrava marries Bharadwaja's daughter and their child is Kubera,, guardian of wealth and he lives on Lanka
• Vayu and Vasuki have a contest to see who's the strongest, which ends up with the peak of mountain blowing off and landing in the sea, creating Lanka
• Sumali wants to be as rich as Kubera so he makes his daughter Kaikesi the wife of Vishrava
• Vishrava predicts that all their children but 1 will be wicked and they end up have 4 children
• Kaikesi wants her son Dashagriva to be greater than Kubera, he cuts off his heads in exchange for immortality from powerful beings, doesn't include humans
• Dashagriva is encouraged by Sumali to take Lanka from Kubera and Kubera agrees but he also escapes to the Himalayas to build Alakapuri
• King Dashagriva starts war with all 3 worlds and Kubera asks him to stop
• Kubera can't be killed but Dashagriva defeats him
• Years later, Rama builds a bridge to Lanka and defeats Dashagriva, now called Ravana, by killing him
• Rama makes Vibhishana king of Lanka
