week 8: extra credit reading notes

Hanuman to the Rescue: Hanuman Brings the Sanjeevani, written by Anant Pai

• Ravana strikes Lakshmana with a spear in battle
• Rama wants to save his brother but the only way is by obtaining a herb from a distant mountain
• Hanuman grows to a gigantic size and flies away to go get the herb
• Ravana sees Hanuman in the sky and wants to destroy him using his monster Kalanemi
• Kalanemi uses magic to get to the mountain and disguises himself as hermit 
• The hermit entertains Hanuman as his guest and then encourages him to bathe in the river where there is a dangerous crocodile 
• Hanuman defeats the crocodile and from it's dead body emerges a dancer who had been cursed by Indra
• The dancer warns Hanuman about the truth of the hermit
• Hanuman goes to the hermit and confronts him, causing Kalanemi to reveal his true form
• They fight but Hanuman wins by throwing Kalanemi all the way back to Lanka
• Ravana summons Surya, the sun god, to speed up the days so Hanuman won't be able to return in time
• Hanuman tries to stop the sun and the sun wants to help Rama anyways, he's just afraid of Ravana
• Hanuman can't find the herb so instead he takes the whole mountain with him and flies back to Rama
• Sushena finds the herb and is able to revive Lakshmana
• Hanuman returns the mountain but as he returns, Ravana sends assassins after him
• Hanuman kills all the assassins but one so that the remaining assassin can let Ravana know they lost
