reading notes: Ramayana part D
The Ramayana by R. K. Narayan (no link because the book is physical), pages 131-171
- Hanuman becomes a giant to cross the ocean to Lanka and finds Sita covered in dust, guarded by demons
- Sita is traumatized and wants to commit suicide but then Hanuman gives Sita Rama's ring and she gives him a piece of jewelry
- Hanuman lets Ravana's son, Indrajit, capture him and bring him to Ravana so he can tell him about Rama
- Ravana's brother tells Ravana not to kill Hanuman but Ravana sets Hanuman's tail on fire so Hanuman burns Lanka to the ground
- Then, architect God Maya has to rebuild the city
- Ravana is angry at Hanuman and Indrajit offers to bring back Rama and Lakshmana's head
- Ravana's brother insists that Ravana let Sita go because he is not protected by humans and is cursed to be destroyed by a monkey
- Ravana rejects his brother's advice because his head is too big and then tells his brother to leave or be killed
- Vibhishana, Ravana's brother, goes to Rama for asylum and Rama takes him in
- Vibhishana gives Rama advice on how to attack Lanka
- Rama has the sea gods help him cross the ocean by letting him build a bridge with the help of men, monkeys and all types of animals
- Rama orders an attack on Lanka and Indrajit uses poison darts to make Rama and Lakshmana faint
- Ravana tries to tell Sita that her brothers are dead but Trijata informs her that they're just stunned
- Garuda removes the power of the poison darts and Hanuman takes Rama to Ravana
- Rama wounds Ravana and then tells him to return the next day with new weapons
- Kumbakarna promises to defeat Rama and kills thousands of monkeys but Rama ends up killing him in the end
- Indrajit creates a fake Sita and kills her, causing all the monkeys to think that she's dead
- Lakshamana kills Indrajit and Ravana is so upset he wants to kill Sita
- Ravana tells the giant Mahodara to attack Lakshmana but he goes after Rama and is destroyed
- Ravana sees many ominous signs before his battle with Rama but he refuses to back down
- Rama destroys Ravana's trident, his most dangerous weapon, and then Rama kills him by attacking his heart
- Rama receives Sita but refuses to bring her back home, afraid that she is impure
- Sita jumps into a fire to declare her purity and the gods vindicate her and return her out of the fire to Sita
- Shiva sends Dasharatha down to earth to see Rama and Rama wishes for Dasharatha to forgive Kaikeyi and Bharata, which he does
- Rama returns to Ayodha after 14 years of exile and Hanuman and Sugriva come to his coronation in human form
